ARI ROAR IMPLODE

‘Implode’ is not a ferocious roar, it’s hardly even a growl, and so when you read the track’s creator is Ari Roar, you’ll begin to understand the deep irony of such a moniker. Signed to Bella Union, Texan musician Caleb Campbell taps into retro wooze, sixties pop and Americana strings for his hazy recollections of the experience of searching out a new relationship. As this unassuming character says, "I wrote this song during a stretch of being single and going through the all-too-familiar string of first dates. I guess it’s my diary entry to the annoyance that can bring when you start reliving the same experience over and over." The whole song is as steadily paced and repetitive as Ari Roar’s many, many dates, the various elements running parallel to one another. It’s soothing and familiar, like the all too easy “okay first date”, but that can only last so long. If you’d like to be whisked away into a bittersweet lo-fi pop daydream, be sure to catch Ari Roar at The Great Escape on May 19th. - Hannah Thacker
